Arizona Professional Chapter of AISES Awards $2,000 in Scholarships

(PHOENIX, AZ) The Arizona Professional Chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AzPC of AISES) is proud to announce the awardees of its fifth annual scholarship program. These four (4) scholarship awardees received checks of $500 each. A total of $2,000 in scholarships was awarded this year by AzPC of AISES.

The Arizona Professional Chapter of AISES college scholarships are awarded to American Indian/Alaska Natives attending Arizona schools of higher education pursuing degrees in the sciences, engineering, medicine, natural resources, math, and technology. The scholarship program is administered by AzPC and funded primarily by the AzPC of AISES Scholarship and Leadership Golf Tournament and scholarship program donations. The 6th Annual AzPC of AISES Scholarship and Leadership Golf Tournament will be held on October 14, 2006 at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale.

2006 AzPC of AISES Scholars are:

Leigh Cody is Navajo, from Kayenta, Arizona, attending Northern Arizona University, majoring in Civil Engineering, and a Sophomore. Leigh has four years of experience as a Civil Engineering Technician with the Indian Health Service and she designed the Two Stars Rodeo Arena in Chilchinbeto, AZ.

Myron James is Navajo, from Chinle, Arizona, attending Northern Arizona University, majoring in Computer Science, and a Senior. Myron interned with Honeywell Aerospace and is a tutor for the Impact Boxing Center.

Carmella Kahn is Navajo, from Gallup, New Mexico, attending University of Arizona, majoring in Microbiology, and a Senior. Carmella interned at the National Institute of Environmental Health Science Laboratory of Molecular Carcinogenesis, and is a former president of the U of A AISES student chapter.

Joshua Lucio is Zuni Pueblo, from Zuni, New Mexico, attending University of Arizona, majoring in Microbiology, and a Senior. Joshua is a student researcher at the U of A Department of Radiation Oncology, and is a former president of Beta Sigma Epsilon.

Scholarship criteria was: Student must be a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited two year or four year college/university; student must attend an accredited two year or four year college/university in the state of Arizona; student must have a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA); student must major in one of the following: math, physical science, engineering, medicine, science, or natural resources; student must be a member of an American Indian tribe or an Alaskan Native; and student must be a member of AISES. Applicants needed to submit a completed application form, official transcripts, a 500 word personal essay, proof of tribal enrollment, and two letters of recommendation.

The following AzPC of AISES members contributed their time for the scholarship evaluations: Lavonda Begay, Wes Dooley, Tamara Jim, Tony Kahn, Sherrie Logg, Sheila Lopez-Aguirre, Sam Sekaquaptewa, and Pam Tracy.
